I saw this posted on The Book Journal and wanted to join in!
1. Iconic First Line
Walt Whitman's Song of Myself
I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.
I love this opening to Walt Whitman's The Song of Myself because it creates a bond back from the time and distance of the writer's life to mine. That straight shot of connect sets the tone of this jubilant poem, creating equality between he and I, and allows me to go on the journey of his worlds with him.
It was between this and the first line of The Hobbit!
